Pillars of Peace - Ireland

This is a block of Kilkenny Blue Limestone from Threecastles quarry in Kilkenny, Ireland. The stone from this quarry is used to make the headstones  and all major monuments for all Irish men and women who served in the World wars and who are commemorated by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission in Ireland.  This limestone was formed 350 million years ago at the bottom of the sea. Indeed on the top of this block the white fossils of the shell fish are still visible.  Belgium and Ireland have similar deposits of Blue Limestone showing the connection between the two countries goes back to the Carboniferous period  , 350 million years ago.   

Dit is een Kilkenny Blue Limestone uit de Threecastles-groeve in Kilkenny, Ierland. De steen uit deze groeve wordt gebruikt om de grafstenen en alle belangrijke monumenten te maken voor alle Ierse mannen en vrouwen die in de wereldoorlogen hebben gediend en die worden herdacht door de Commonwealth War Graves Commission in Ierland.  Deze kalksteen werd 350 miljoen jaar geleden gevormd op de bodem van de zee. Op de bovenkant van dit blok zijn de witte fossielen van de schelpdieren nog steeds zichtbaar.  België en Ierland hebben vergelijkbare afzettingen van Blauwe Kalksteen waaruit blijkt dat de band tussen de twee landen teruggaat tot het Carboon, 350 miljoen jaar geleden.
