Pillars of Peace - Slovakia

The stone representing Slovakia in Mesen originates in the High Tatras. The exact location is under the Kriváň Mountain, which is the national symbol of Slovakia.

It was transported to Belgium from the banks of the Belá River, one of the most picturesque Slovak streams. Its vigorous flow is a symbol of purity, strength, renewal, and hope.

During the First World War, the eastern front passed through the area of Eastern Slovakia, into which the High Tatras range extends.

The world knows well the war cemeteries in Belgium. Similar memorial places in Slovakia are less well known. However, this does not mean that the Eastern Front of the First World War was less bloody. Here, too, thousands of soldiers lost their lives.

The sad legacy of frontline cemeteries connects Slovakia and Belgium. Two small European countries that found themselves on two fronts of the Great War. Countries whose peoples were, like many others, thrown into the madness of the global conflict.

Kameň, ktorý v Mesen reprezentuje Slovensko, je z pohoria Vysoké Tatry. Pochádza z lokality pod štítom Kriváň, ktorý je národným symbolom Slovenska.

Rieka Belá, z brehu ktorej bol prevezený do Belgicka, je jednou z najkrajších slovenských riek. Jej dravý tok je symbolom:  

• rýdzosti, pôvodnosti, sily.
• čistoty, obnovy, nádeje (v niečo nové, pozitívne).

Oblasťou Východného Slovenska, do ktorej pohorie vysokých Tatier zasahuje, prechádzal počas 1. svetovej vojny východný front.

Celý svet pozná vojnové cintoríny v Belgicku. Menej známe sú obdobné pamätné miesta na Slovensku. Neznamená to však, že východný front prvej svetovej vojny bol menej krvavý. Aj tu prišli o životy tisícky vojakov.

Smutné dedičstvo frontových cintorínov spája Slovensko a Belgicko, dve malé európske krajiny, ktoré sa ocitli na dvoch frontoch Veľkej vojny, a ktorých národy boli, ako mnohé iné, uvrhnuté do šialenstva tohto globálneho konfliktu.
